Thanks To All Our Supporters

It's close to the end of our fundraising month at NM. Will we cross the line? With your help, yes! Read on for the final update on our supporter drive

We are approaching the end of our fundraising month at NM so we thought we would update you on our progress.

The good news is we have almost 500 brand new supporters on our books!

The bad news is only around 300 of our 1300 original donors have renewed their support. If you are one of the remaining 1000, you will lose your supporter status on the site on October 1. It’s not too late to renew! You can do it here.

All up we have 800 supporters for 2012 — which is not enough for us to commit to a year of publishing, but we will be around for a while longer yet.

Thank you to everyone who has pledged their support. We’ve been gratified by the response from our readers who’ve committed cold hard cash to keeping NM online.

If you’ve been waiting for a photo finish, now is the time to sign up. It doesn’t cost much — as little as $4.60 a month — and you’ll be keeping independent media diversity alive. If you’ve already subscribed and want to do more to help, give your networks a nudge and encourage them to become financial supporters of NM too.

If you’re having problems signing up, we’ve set up a helpline to help you solve them this week. Call us on 0426 291 213 and NM writer and office ace Adam Brereton will answer your questions, help you navigate the PayPal interface — or work out another option.

Well I’d just like to say that I’m very happy you’ll be continuing and hope that many more come on board so that the full year is guaranteed.

I’m one of the 500 newbies and realise that many like myself have probably been lurking - yes I have always seen the value in this publication but it wasn’t until you were on the line that I put my money where my mouth is. I feel that although only 300 out of 1300 original members have recommitted so far they are the ones who were ahead of the game in understanding the need to support quality and integrity. I’m absolutely sure these people are proud and supportive of the work done here and that there will be a great many renewals at the last minute.

This is great news, Marni and Catriona. Let’s hope that all of the original 1,300 supporters sign up soon. We need New Matilda!

For god’s sake, people! We keep asking for independent voices as a balance for the Bolts & Jones’ of the world, but we won’t put our money where our (chardonnay-sipping) mouths are when it comes to the crunch! This is important. Signing online petitions is one thing, but thoughtful & informed journalism and debate have an influence on the way whole societies behave. Seriously, should all the heavy lifting be left to others? Should the tabloids have a free run on setting the agenda? It’s just a few bucks. Come on…

I would have signed up but the only choice was Paypal. I hate Paypal with a passion.

No it’s not, weldo!

The other option is to send us a cheque made out to Cordell Media and sent to locked bag 2000/152 Surry Hills 2010, or transfer money directly into our account (Acc name: Cordell Media, BSB: 062033 Acc No:1044 8257).

If you choose to pay using one of these options, please let us know, along with your full name, postal address and preferred email and we’ll update your account as soon as possible.

Thanks for your support. Marni (Ed)

C’mon Australia support a brilliant service. Marni, why doesn’t NM sell merchandise?

They used to (via Cafe Press?). I’ve been wearing the shirt all month! Some bloke even came and chatted to me about the drive. Though, I think it (the shirt) came from the states and wasn’t particularly cheap… Best of luck guys.

Hi Weldo,

I’m with you and hate Paypal. Go ahead - write the cheque (or do a Internet banking transfer - but that doesn’t have the same ring to it!!!). I did.

I’m as poor as a church mouse, and I managed to cough up $7 a month, so what’s wrong with the people who haven’t renewed? Have they been contacted directly by email? Repeatedly?

Hi Marni,
With the Bank transfer option, do you want a monthly payment or can we not pay upfront?

Hi franksting,

It is up to you, but the reason we have been asking people to sign up to monthly payments is that at this stage we don’t know whether we will be around for another full year - that will depend on how successful our fundraising efforts are.

But if you’re willing to take that chance and give us an up-front yearly fee we won’t say no!

Jandamarra - yes, we did used to have a T-shirt shop on Cafe Press and merchandise is a great idea. There are many good ideas on that ‘to do’ list! We’ll see if we can get on to it next year.

Thanks everyone for your support.

Cheers, MC

I had some trouble with funding a few months ago as well. At the time method chosen for funding involved an organisation requiring far more personal details than I was willing to provide. emails for help and assistance were not answered.

Ironically, with PayPal I am now able to help the funding, although I refuse to link any banking accounts worth more than a few dollars to the PayPal account for fear of the skulduggery for which PayPal are rather infamous for.

On a different note, the original New Matilda, as I can recall, had a period during which there appeared to be an active drive toward making Australians aware of the debate concerning a Bill of Rights.

I might be very mistaken, but as I recall, this drive attracted many paying members to the site. I wonder whether this sort of active agitation for specific goals and ideals might not work to assist with funding?

hi marni, have you considered doing an iphone/ipad/android app and charging $2 a month recurring for it? I’m sure you know that is a business model of the guardian and fairfax, and I’m sure many others. I know many people who will happily do that and i may be able to donate some services for making the program

What is this skulduggery that you say Paypal is so infamous for? It sounds so… sinister. Yet unfounded. I have been using Paypal for nearly 10 years for private purchases all over the world and for being paid by my customers. I have never been “skulduggered” by Paypal, nor have I been “skulduggered” by any other financial institions that have all my details with which I use passwords to authorise transactions. They are just another Visa, Mastercard, EFTPOS…. another member of the financial virtual world we live in.
Nor have I ever heard of anyone being hacked by Paypal and ripped off. What is this “skulduggery” you talk of? Is it libelous?

Hi p.chisolm,

An ipad app would be great - if you know someone who could develop it for free let me know!! No seriously, there are many things we’d love to do with the site if we had the budget. We still need more supporters before we can commit to staying online next year so tell all your friends to get on board!

Cheers, MC

@ ninety nine - PayPal is not a financial institution Pal, they are also not another Visa, Mastercard etc they are not a licence financial insitution and they are not bound by any banking laws - good luck if you like them so much

That you have never been skulduggered is good news - I pray it stays that way.
